1. Find your Niche.

1 word. Intentionality.

As you make a decision on what niche you’d like your blog to be focused on, be intentional about the specific food niche you pick. This will help you stay true to your brand. You’re probably thinking, isn’t it all just food, Kane? Well, that’s kinda true but the food space is vast, ranging from recipe blogs (like this one), cuisine and diet-specific blogs, restaurant review blogs, travel food blogs, among others.

Identify where your passion and interests lie. It has to be something you genuinely enjoy doing, this will help you stay motivated through the days blogging doesn’t seem so cheery. This does not mean that you completely limit yourself to that line of writing and posts, you are free to indulge in the other spaces from time to time. Find your niche and attack it, making sure you let your unique voice is heard, and your people will find you! You can expand slowly as you continue to grow and continue to discover your love and interests in the food space. Strive to be intentional and strike a balance.

2. Authenticity.

2 words. Be yourself.

To have a successful food blog, let your readers be able to relate to you. Allow your personality to shine through your posts. I like showing mine through little stories right before the recipe details and in posts like these. Your readers will appreciate relating to you on a human level. Personally, I gravitate towards content that I find relatable and peaks my curiosity about the author. The person behind the keyboard. The authenticity and uniqueness in your writing, organization, and format is your greatest strength!

3. Quality content.

3 words. Quality over quantity.

Invest in your writing skills and especially, your photography and editing skills. Your readers cannot smell, touch or taste your food, they rely heavily on the visuals and your description skills. Create images that draw your readers to want to reach into their screens and touch the food and words to engage your readers’ imagination.

As a beginner, this might be a little intimidating, especially due to the price point of high-end equipment and a lack of experience. Remember the idea is to grow and learn on the job. Relax, take it easy but remember to invest time to improve your skills and learn how to make the best out of what you already have. Personally, I still strive to improve my photos as I learn to use my equipment to get the best results.

If you’re struggling with buying lighting, strive to take all your photos in crisp natural light. Use fabrics, manila, wrapping paper, pieces of wood, cute cups, herbs as props and backdrops to improve your picture composition. Watch videos and read blogs that teach you how to compose and edit beautiful photos. The information out here is vast and sufficient. Take some time to invest in your craft and you will see the rewards.

4. Social media

4 words. Get yourself out there.

Share your content on different platforms to be discovered. Identify your favorite platforms and introduce new people to your amazing content! Share links with your friends, family, and strangers on the internet and create a lovely community of people who love and relate to your content. Do you spend a lot of time scrolling through Instagram liking posts? Start an Instagram page dedicated to your blog. Spend some of that time sharing your beautiful photos and blog links on your Instagram page and other platforms.

Is this a good time to shamelessly plug myself? LOL. I think it’s a perfect time to. Feel free to follow me on Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter, and YouTube- let’s connect!

Just as a bonus, be patient. Blog and influencer growth is slow but worth it. Get into it and adjust to the long game. It becomes easier and more natural as you continue to learn and the momentum of growth continues to skyrocket.
